| How come we get head lice? |
Head lice are a normal part of Nature, a living creature that needs food and shelter. Human blood is it's food supply and human hair their perfect shelter. In other words they belong on us. Trouble is we don't like that very much and want to get rid of them. Don't ever be surprised when they show up in class, they are actually normal companions to us humans.

| Is
it due to dirty hair? |
No absolutely
not, it's more to do with skin chemistry. Some heads are just nice
places to be if you are a head louse. If your child's head is an attractive
head they will be plagued while their brother, sister or even twin
may never have a visitor.

| Will head lice just wash off? |
Oh no, they are not that easy to shift. They are very well adapted to hanging on to human hair and won't be washed off even with shampoos and torrents of water. They won't wash off in the pool either, before you ask.

| How can head lice seem to appear almost overnight? |
Head lice are very tiny and you won't know the moment they climb on to your head. No itching or scratching for days, even weeks. All the while they are laying 6-8 eggs every day. After a week these start to hatch and 7 days later these new born lice can start adding their own eggs and you probably still haven't felt a thing. By the time you get the first itch they will have laid a lot of eggs and plenty will have hatched so the first time you look you find an awful lot of little visitors. Big surprise!

| Can you tell if a child is using NITMIX? |
No, it is a very faint scent unless you really put your nose down into the hair. Even then a child can just say it is the smell of a hair conditioner or shampoo and say no more than that. |

| Just what is a nit and what is a louse? |
The egg is called a nit and is glued to the hair strand. If you see a little white blob in the hair and it won't budge when you try to slide it down the hair shaft then your child has "nits" or a case of head lice.
Head lice are the little creepy crawly things about the size of a greenfly but without the wings.

| Is killing head lice the easy option? |
I wish it were! Killing head lice is tricky because you don't want to use anything really potent on your child's skin so most chemicals are only just strong enough to kill lice but often don't. You get left with a few live lice and within 2-3 weeks they are back up to full strength and you still have your problem.

it advisable to cut the hair short? |
Not unless the
child really wants short hair. It can be very humiliating and distressing
to be forced to have part of ones identity changed. We have never
come across a case where cutting the hair was absolutely necessary.
Better to take heart that this is probably the last time you will
have to treat the hair for lice and hang in there with it!

sort of comb should I use? |
 This
one! Nope doesn't look much does it, but this little gem will quickly
drag out more creepy crawlies than you will believe! You can, of course,
buy a $30 comb from some other sites, but that's up to you. (Won't
make you weep if you loose it or give it to your best friend either.)
